How often and what are the costs?

Wheel balancing will extend the life of your new tyres and contribute to uniform wear. Below you will find out how wheel balancing works and how it benefits you.
How does wheel balancing work?
First, it should be noted that the correct term is indeed “wheel balancing” and not tyre balancing. A tyre is only the drawn onto the rim. The balancing part has nothing to do with the fitting. It is about a uniform shaping of the entire wheel. Roughly distinguish between static and dynamic balancing. Both variants are carried out by our experts at our very well-equipped workshop. The wheel to be balanced is placed in a special balancing machine and set in fast turns. The machine analyses the simulated running behaviour of the tyre and detects any irregularities. This is indicated by previously attached sensors. Any imbalances are compensated with small weights, which are attached to the rims. After that, a re-examination with the balancing machine takes place, wherein the sensors should indicate an improvement of the running behaviour by the weights. Possibly several passes are necessary with renewed attaching or shifting of weights.
Balancing - how often?
As mentioned before, balancing is always recommended every time you are having a new tyre fitted.
But also after an accident or a smaller impact like driving through a pothole or hitting a curb, balancing may be necessary. If you have the feeling, the handling of the vehicle is no longer as quiet and comfortable, especially at higher speeds, you should get your wheels checked.
Even when changing from winter to summer tyres and vice versa, occasional balancing is recommended.
Why should tyres even be balanced?
Balancing simply means that any imbalance of the wheel is compensated. The tyre is thus made "rounder" again, the force of its movement is thereby aligned more strongly on the centre of the supporting central axis. There are several advantages to the regular elimination of any unbalance:
- No one-sided wear: Even with a perfectly round tyre you would not be able to prevent it from becoming unbalanced over time. For this example, braking maneuvres are responsible for heavy abrasion, which cause uneven wear of the profile. Tyre production with a one-sided valve creates a slight imbalance. By balancing regularly, you can compensate for the effects of irregular wear, which is reflected in a smoother ride.
- Increasing the life: This further advantage is a direct result of uniform wear. Unbalanced wheels with one-sided tyre abrasion/uneven profile have a negative effect on safe road holding.
You must think about replacing your tyres much earlier than with a balanced wheel. Balancing thus promotes longer life of your tyres.
- Reduction of damage: Even if the imbalance is minimal and not detected by the naked eye, your suspension must compensate for this effect. This causes not only the uneven wear of the tyres/wheels. Other vehicle components are unnecessarily and excessively burdened as well. The result is creeping damage that is not directly related to the wheels or tyres. Regular balancing reduces the risk of damaging the vehicle.
